MBO FOLDER CHECK POINT LIST
*This is a general check point list which must be performed with the POWER OFF to the machine and safety lockouts installed to prevent anyone from starting the machine while being inspected, this should not be construed as factory recommendations, but rather a suggested list our trained service technicians; also any adjustments should be made by qualified trained technicians.
- *Check tension on drive chain for continuous feed models, it should not be loose enough to allow the rear drum to rock; an adjustment screw is located on the chain drive assembly.
- *Filters should be cleaned regularly at a minimal 1 week interval, after which the operator can get a good feel for how often they are to be serviced. New filters should be installed at the most every 6 months. Spray powder is the major factor here, if spray powder is building up in the filters you need to clean and change them more frequently. ALWAYS consult your maintenance manuals for your individual pumps. Some types of pumps have veins that need examined on a regular basis to assure top performance of the pump.
- *The suction valve is located on most MBO folders just in front of the suction wheel. It is a small black square plastic solenoid with a hex nut on top. Remove the hex nut and lift the black plastic solenoid up and off of the piston, remove the piston by unscrewing it with the proper size wrench. You can then clean the piston and valve, be sure to reassemble dry, DO NOT LUBRICATE, and reverse the procedure for removing it to reassemble. Do not over-tighten the top nut you will crack the solenoid.
- *Check the suction wheel for proper air clearance between the suction wheel and the brass suction piece located on the bottom of the aluminum housing behind the suction wheel. This is the point where the suction wheel gets its vacuum. There should be just enough air clearance between the brass piece and the back of the suction wheel so as to allow the suction wheel to spin without making contact with the brass part. If you notice brass filings around the suction wheel or in the suction valve you should replace and readjust the tolerance for the brass part and the suction wheel. Also try to raise or wiggle the suction wheel to check the suction wheel drive shaft for play.

- * Check the double sheet detector for accuracy, if you have been noticing that the double sheet detector in not working correctly and have tried to adjust it. Check the return spring and the bottom of the double detector shoe; it may have a worn or flat spot on it. If so you will need to replace it. Also there is a bearing located directly underneath the detector shoe. This bearing should turn freely with just a touch of resistance. If it turns really free or with difficulty replace it.
- *On continuous feeders check the rear white Teflon straps, they should ride higher in the center of the chain straps than the roller portion, if they are worn from paper rubbing against them then replace them.
- *Wipe off the feeder belts, particularly underneath them, the dirt will gather under the belt and cause friction while running large sheets.
- *Check the feeder proximity switch locate underneath the suction wheel, it is vital that the arm moves freely and there are no nicks on it.
- *Check the blower bar for correct position of the blower tabs and clean the holes or slots with a thin round object or piece of thin flat material.
- *Check condition of the red in-feed belt located underneath the side-guide, there should be no tears or rips.
- *Check the square-ness of the side-guide to the rollers, sometimes the dial indicator gets bumped and the side-guide is not truly square when set on zero.
- *Check the side-guide drive coupling located underneath the side-guide. This coupling will wear and cause vibration in the side-guide, if cleaning it doesn’t help then it will need replaced.
- *Check the side-guide for grooves cut into it, remove the marbles and run a sheet of paper in and against the side-guide, if there is a groove the sheet will usually stumble. You may need to remove and visually inspect the side-guide if you suspect there is indeed a groove in it. Grooves are usually caused from using too many steel marbles in the side-guide.

- *Check the level of the main unit by putting a level across a fold roller for left to right measurement, and across the top of the frame by the roller settings for front to back. There are leveling screws to adjust any parts of the machine that need adjusted.
- *Remove guards and check components for rust or wear, sticky levers can be cleaned and lubricated. Belts can be changed or adjusted at this point.
- *Reset the roller tensions, the quickest way is to put a single thickness of 20# or 50# in the gap sets, then with strips of paper check and adjust each roller. This is a good time to check for wear in the center of the rollers by seeing if the middle is looser than the ends.
- *Clean and check your fold plates and deflectors check for loose screws and for paper which could be stuck in between the plate ribs.
- *Check deflectors for nicks, these will cause many problems, clean with fine emery cloth.
- *Check slitter shaft ends where the brass bushings are located for wear, also clean the quick release handles and shafts to allow for free movement.
- *Check slitter shaft for nicks caused from attachments or using wrong set screws that do not have a brass end on them. Always replace set screws with the type that have a brass tip on them.
- *Square side-guide on right angles and marble holders for cracks, also check the plastic marbles to make sure that they are round, if your MBO uses adjustable marble holders chances are the marbles are no longer round if they have been in use for very long. Replace as needed.
- *Check all cords and plugs for wear or loose connections, then wipe machine down.
*If parts are needed contact Bindery Parts Store for replacement parts. Also if you have any questions feel free to speak with one of our trained technicians at our office by calling (800) 560-0834.
